Can Dogs Eat Cabbage?

ModerateSmall Amounts, Cooked

Small amounts of cooked cabbage are generally fine, though large or regular amounts can cause gas and, over time, may affect thyroid function.

Why

Cabbage, like other cruciferous vegetables, contains compounds that can interfere with iodine uptake if fed in very large amounts regularly — a real consideration for dogs with existing thyroid conditions, though not a concern for occasional small servings in otherwise healthy dogs.

How to serve it safely

  • Cook lightly and serve plain, in small amounts
  • Avoid regular, large feeding, especially for dogs with thyroid conditions
  • Skip coleslaw and other prepared cabbage dishes with added dressing, salt, or onion
