Can Dogs Eat Cinnamon?

ModerateSmall Amounts Only

A small sprinkle of ground cinnamon is generally considered safe, but larger amounts can irritate the mouth and digestive tract, and cinnamon essential oil is a separate, more concerning risk.

Why

Ground cinnamon in the small amounts typically found in baked goods isn't associated with serious toxicity, but larger direct exposure (a dog getting into a container of cinnamon, for instance) can cause mouth irritation, coughing, and GI upset. Cinnamon essential oil is more concentrated and carries a higher risk of skin and GI irritation if ingested.

How to serve it safely

  • A pinch in a baked treat is not typically a concern
  • Never offer cinnamon essential oil or concentrated supplements to a dog
  • Keep cinnamon containers out of reach — a dog inhaling or ingesting a large amount directly can cough and choke
