Can Dogs Eat Hummus?

ModerateUsually Contains Garlic

Most hummus recipes include garlic as a standard ingredient, making it a food to check carefully or avoid rather than share by default.

Why

Chickpeas themselves (the base of hummus) aren't a toxicity concern, but garlic is such a standard hummus ingredient that assuming any given tub is garlic-free is a real risk. Some garlic-free variations exist, but they're the exception.

How to serve it safely

  • Check the ingredient list specifically for garlic before sharing any hummus
  • Assume garlic is present unless the label confirms otherwise
  • Plain cooked chickpeas without hummus seasoning are a safer way to share this ingredient
