Can Dogs Eat Melktert?

ModerateNot Recommended

A small taste of melktert isn't likely to cause serious harm, but its sugar, dairy, and nutmeg-dusted topping combine several minor concerns that add up, so it's best not shared.

Why

None of melktert's individual components are highly dangerous in the small amount a dog might steal, but the combination of sugar, dairy (lactose), a pastry base, and a nutmeg garnish means several minor risk factors stack together. It's a good example of a food that's not an emergency but also isn't worth offering.

How to serve it safely

  • Best avoided as an intentional treat
  • If a dog steals a slice, monitor for GI upset from the dairy and sugar
  • The nutmeg dusting is light enough in a normal slice to be a minor rather than major concern on its own
