Can Dogs Eat Oranges?

ModerateSmall Amounts

A few small segments of orange flesh are usually fine, but the acidity, sugar, and essential oils in the peel make this a limited, occasional treat.

Why

Orange flesh isn't toxic, but the citric acid can upset sensitive stomachs, and the peel, pith, and seeds contain compounds and oils that are harder for dogs to digest and can cause GI irritation. Some dogs also simply dislike the smell and taste.

How to serve it safely

  • Remove all peel, pith, and seeds
  • Offer only a segment or two at a time
  • Skip citrus entirely for dogs with sensitive stomachs
  • Avoid orange juice — concentrated sugar and acidity with none of the fibre
