Can Dogs Eat Pizza?

ModerateNot Recommended

Pizza isn't a good treat for dogs — the combination of high fat and salt cheese, processed meats, and frequent onion or garlic in the sauce or toppings adds up to more risk than the food is worth.

Why

No single ingredient in typical pizza is necessarily an acute emergency in a small bite, but the combination is genuinely poor: tomato sauce often includes onion and garlic, cured meats like pepperoni are high in salt and fat, and cheese adds further fat and lactose. It's less a single-toxin risk and more a cumulative-poor-choice food.

How to serve it safely

  • Best avoided as a treat altogether
  • If your dog steals a slice, check the toppings and sauce for onion/garlic content
  • Watch for GI upset over the following day given the fat and salt load
