Can Dogs Eat Yogurt?

ModeratePlain, Unsweetened Only

Plain, unsweetened yogurt in small amounts is generally fine and can even support digestion in some dogs, but flavoured or sweetened varieties often contain xylitol or excess sugar.

Why

Plain yogurt with live cultures carries no toxicity concern and its lower lactose content (compared to milk) makes it easier for many dogs to digest. The real risk is entirely in what's added — flavoured and 'diet' yogurts increasingly use xylitol as a sweetener, which is severely toxic to dogs.

How to serve it safely

  • Choose plain, unsweetened yogurt only — always check the label for xylitol
  • Avoid flavoured, fruit, or 'diet' yogurt varieties
  • A small spoonful is a reasonable treat portion
